Urethra stones (plugs) are primarily seen in neutered males.  Most of the urethral plugs develop in Alkaline Urine (high pH).  They are called struvites (magnesium ammonium phosphates or triple phosphate).  On some  occasions urethral plugs are formed in Acidic Urine (low pH).  These plugs are called calcium oxalates.  The urethra is the tube carrying urine from the bladder to the outside.  When accumulation of mineral crystals (stones) occurs, the urethra is plugged.  If not treated quickly, urethral blockage may become a potentially fatal disease.

Typical symptoms of urethra stones:

            *      No urination

*      Failure to use litter box and urinating in unusual places

*      Blood in urine

*      Frequent trips to the litter box

*      Discolored urine

*      Crying when urinating or licking genital area excessively
